Narrow Stairs, the bootleg.

Ok, so I totally fell for what has to be one of the most downloaded pranks to date in the bootleg world. I got a message from a good friend saying- "hey, I'm about to get a bootleg of the new Death Cab For Cutie album... I'll send it your way when I get home." Wha?? really? it's like a little over a month from the release! sweet. I'll preface this by saying that I'm a buyer, not a stealer- and always would buy an album I downloaded early, when it did come out. Anyone that knows me would vouch for my large and still growing album collection. I don't pirate to save cash. I was just so excited about hearing the album that I got blinded. I clicked the link and began to download, all the while gathering the artwork I tracked down, and a tracklist to name the files appropriately. I listened to it and just felt weird about it. I couldn't put my finger on it, but I was still in full belief that it was in fact DCFC. My excuses starting coming: perhaps he's trying to sing lower, maybe they want to sound like their older tracks- maybe... ok this sounds nothing like them- why would they make such a weird album? no hooks? A friend of mine that I shared the album with text's me at 8am- "It's a Fake!" By the time I got to work it was all figured out. The blogger that did it took a tracks from a band called Velveteen and added in one DCFC song,"I Will Possess Your Heart", and passed it off as the new album Narrow Stairs for an April Fool's prank.

The 10 songs used to make the mutt, aside from the DCFC song, are actually from the same album, Home Waters by german natives Velveteen- who actually sound hauntingly reminiscent of Death Cab and frontman Ben Gibbard. The opening track still, to me, sounds direct off one of their older releases. Apparently he did this last year with the band Cut City as an Interpol release, but it didn't hit this size reach. Relieved that this collection was not in fact Death Cab's new album Narrow Stairs, I actually kinda like the album- minus "I Will Possess Your Heart" in the mix. I'm not sure how this will effect the release of the actual album at this point, but it can't hurt it. Also, I bet the band Velveteen will see a drastic increase in website hits this weekend! Pay them a vist: www.velveteen-music.de and listen to the passed off DCFC tracks in full on their site.

final thought, if something seems too good to be true, as always, it probably is just that.
